Chris Cubeta and the Liars Club

Chris Cubeta and the Liars Club is a guitar-driven rock and roll band that sounds a lot like if Neil Young or Pearl Jam found themselves making music in Brooklyn, circa 2011. The band’s third studio album will be released on June 11 at Mercury Lounge in New York City.

The eponymous LP is a return to the form of the group’s melancholy and spirited Faithful (2005), but also an artistic departure for Cubeta, whose “sturdy, passionate … roots-rock quartet” (Time Out New York) takes a more nuanced look at the vast emotional territory of love, loss and the ambiguities in between.

“This album captures the space I’ve been in during the last few years in New York,” said Cubeta. “I’ve been trying to deal with ideas and colors at the same time. I want people to be able to feel the record viscerally on a first listen, but also to go back on subsequent listens and have some of those initial perceptions challenged.”

The new album, Cubeta’s first full-length effort in nearly five years, contains all the elements that have made The Liars Club a favorite on the New York City rock scene: plaintive, catchy melodies; lyrical attention to the vagaries of human relationships; and a powerful band (featuring Jeff Berner, John Passineau, and a host of other talented musicians) intent on conveying the cavalcade of feelings conjured by the frontman’s vocals.

However, the album also represents a broader musical palette, with words simultaneously more raw and more sophisticated than Cubeta’s previous efforts. The record is highlighted by the Dylan-esque, lyrical torrent of “All We Are,” the desperate momentum of “I Need You There” and the dynamic companion tracks, “I’m Sorry” and “You Should Be Too,” that punctuate the album’s cathartic conclusion.

The Liars Club has appeared at almost all of New York’s most notable venues, including Bowery Ballroom, The Music Hall of Williamsburg, Highline Ballroom and has hosted several, month-long residencies at The Living Room. They’ve also toured extensively in support of some of the industry’s biggest names: The Wallflowers, Suzanne Vega, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Jackie Greene, Will Hoge, Corey Smith, Wakey! Wakey!, Justin Townes Earle and Chris Trapper, among others. The band continues to frequent some of the best clubs in the Eastern, Southern and Midwestern areas of the United States, including Tin Angel (Philadelphia), Rock and Roll Hotel (Washington D.C.), Harpers Ferry (Boston), Headliners Music Hall (Louisville), Minglewood Hall (Memphis), The Valarium (Knoxville) and Bogart’s (Cincinnati). The Liars Club plans to tour the West Coast this fall.

And read this AMAZING review of their debut album in Jambands.com, that begins: “Referring to Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds as a funk band just doesn’t get the job done. Don’t get me wrong – there’s all the nasty-ass, hip-grinding, sweat-soaked-but-cool-as-hell funk on their self-titled debut album that you could ever want, but there’s also so much more.”

New Music Tuesday: Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds

26 Oct

Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds blend old school gut-busting funk and soul with straight up rock and roll. Led by Arleigh Kincheloe’s strong vocals, the appropriately named Dirty Birds are a flock of eight men that create a sometimes sexy other times funky – but always tight– powerhouse wall of sound where the harmonica plays a front and center role.
