New Music Tuesday: Res

23 Aug

After a decade in the music industry, soul, rock and pop singer Res (aka Shareese Ballard) is working hard to restart her career– entirely on her own.

Res

Res

Her debut album, How I Do (2001), spawned the single “They Say Vision,” which hit number one on the Billboard dance chart and number 37 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. In 2006, she toured with Cee Lo Green and Gnarls Barkley. But after the highs and lows of success, she returned to her hometown of Philadelphia two years ago to independently rebuild her career.

Look for her forthcoming album Reset (release date TBD), which again has her working with How I Do producer Doc McKinney and she’ll release a collection of Fleetwood Mac covers, called ReFried Mac, later this year.

Don’t miss Res at the Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn on August 28th!

Full Disclosure: Res is a great artist but we don’t work for her. We just dig her tunes.

NMT: Jessie and the Toy Boys

16 Aug

Jessie and the Toy Boys create mainstream electro-pop tunes for the masses.

Jessie and the Toy Boys

Jessie and the Toy Boys

In 2008 it was widely reported that Jessie and the Toy Boys‘ single “Trash Me“ heavily influenced Britney Spears’ hit “If U Seek Amy.” Ripped off or not, Jessie and The Toy Boys have been serving as an opening act for Britney’s Femme Fatale tour. But sexy songstress Jessie Malakouti isn’t just a pretty face; she’s the voice and the brains behind the band, as well. The recently released LP, Show Me Your Tan Lines, is full of energizing and extremely catchy pop tracks. Check them out at the Identity Festival in New York on August 21st.

Full Disclosure: Jessie and the Toyboys are a great band but we don’t work for them. We just dig their tunes.

New Music Tuesday: Friendly Fires

9 Aug

At the age of 14, Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge formed First Day Back, a British post-hardcore outfit. Now under the influence of lush dance music and classic pop, their young rock days still find a place in the music they make today as the indie pop trio Friendly Fires.

Friendly Fires

Friendly Fires

Friendly Fires’ tunes are the perfect tropical soundtrack for a posh night club. Their recently released album, Pala, is a colorful pop record that will be stuck in your head for days. Named after the island in the 1962 novel Island by Aldous Huxley, the mesmerizing beats created by this trio will put you in a utopian state of mind.

Friendly Fires are currently on a world wide tour. After a recent stop at NYC’s Summerstage, they will make their next stop at the Summer Sonic in Osaka, Japan on August 13th.

Full Disclosure: Friendly Fires are a great band but we don’t work for them. We just dig their tunes.

Vocalist + Trombonist elizabeth! Releases “Brainchildren” 11/1

elizabeth! releases "Brainchildren" November 1st

elizabeth! Releases Brainchildren November 1st

Vocalist, trombonist, and songwriter elizabeth! will release Brainchildren, her debut album of original jazz pop music, on November 1st, 2011.

elizabeth!, who has performed and toured with pop stars like Michael Bolton, jazz musicians like Matt Wilson, and indie rockers like St. Vincent, recorded Brainchildren (Canopy Jazz) in Brooklyn, NY in a single day.

Inspired by travels around the world, the album outlines similarities found in our experiences no matter where we live. “Three” tells the story of a couple deciding to have a child, “Bicycle” reminds a child to enjoy his innocence while it lasts, and “Melting Snow” describes the feeling of rebirth after tragedy. Several songs relate tales of love gained or lost, and the album is rounded out with instrumentals inspired by insomnia, tacos, and a skipping stroll in Memphis.

Brainchildren features Rob Jost (Saturday Night Live, Bjork) on bass and Robert Di Pietro (Norah Jones, Josh Rouse) on drums and special guests include Kiku Collins (Beyonce), Jon Natchez (Beirut), and Mark Erelli (Josh Ritter).

Brainchildren follows elizabeth!’s 2008 release hot & silver, an EP of jazz standards in which she turned classic American songbook tunes like “L-O-V-E” and “Night and Day” into her own creations.

eJazzNews called it “a classy entrance into the world of jazz.”

The Palo Alto Daily News said “her silky, sultry, elegant vocals enliven standards …elizabeth! gives each tune a few tasty new twists.”

elizabeth! has performed across the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. Notable venues include: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Chicago Theater, Sasquatch Music Festival, Good Morning America, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Today Show, PBS’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize broadcast honoring Tina Fey, Bowery Ballroom, Jazz Standard, and Switzerland’s Willisau Jazz Festival. She recently sang at the Yaroslavl Jazz Festival in Russia, and last year spent time teaching trombone in Quito, Ecuador.

She will tour the East and West Coast this fall in support of Brainchildren.

New Music Tuesday: Freelance Whales

26 Jul

Freelance Whales are a free-spirited indie pop band from Queens, New York. Band members Judah, Doris, Chuck, Jacob and Kevin are talented multi-instrumentalists whose tales of love, dreams and childhood memories are nestled between folk melodies. Weathervanes, the quintet’s first album, is a dainty record layered with banjos, synths and bells. You may have heard their song “Generator 1st Floor” in a Starbucks commercial earlier this year.

Freelance Whales

Freelance Whales

Freelance Whales are easy to fall in love with; they are calm, enchanting and comforting. It’s as if their music wraps its arms around you just as you’re falling asleep, after an evening of chasing fireflies and watching the stars fill up the night sky.

Freelance Whales will be performing at the Newport Folk Festival on July 30th!
