Chris Cubeta and the Liars Club

Chris Cubeta and the Liars Club is a guitar-driven rock and roll band that sounds a lot like if Neil Young or Pearl Jam found themselves making music in Brooklyn, circa 2011. The band’s third studio album will be released on June 11 at Mercury Lounge in New York City.

The eponymous LP is a return to the form of the group’s melancholy and spirited Faithful (2005), but also an artistic departure for Cubeta, whose “sturdy, passionate … roots-rock quartet” (Time Out New York) takes a more nuanced look at the vast emotional territory of love, loss and the ambiguities in between.

“This album captures the space I’ve been in during the last few years in New York,” said Cubeta. “I’ve been trying to deal with ideas and colors at the same time. I want people to be able to feel the record viscerally on a first listen, but also to go back on subsequent listens and have some of those initial perceptions challenged.”

The new album, Cubeta’s first full-length effort in nearly five years, contains all the elements that have made The Liars Club a favorite on the New York City rock scene: plaintive, catchy melodies; lyrical attention to the vagaries of human relationships; and a powerful band (featuring Jeff Berner, John Passineau, and a host of other talented musicians) intent on conveying the cavalcade of feelings conjured by the frontman’s vocals.

However, the album also represents a broader musical palette, with words simultaneously more raw and more sophisticated than Cubeta’s previous efforts. The record is highlighted by the Dylan-esque, lyrical torrent of “All We Are,” the desperate momentum of “I Need You There” and the dynamic companion tracks, “I’m Sorry” and “You Should Be Too,” that punctuate the album’s cathartic conclusion.

The Liars Club has appeared at almost all of New York’s most notable venues, including Bowery Ballroom, The Music Hall of Williamsburg, Highline Ballroom and has hosted several, month-long residencies at The Living Room. They’ve also toured extensively in support of some of the industry’s biggest names: The Wallflowers, Suzanne Vega, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Jackie Greene, Will Hoge, Corey Smith, Wakey! Wakey!, Justin Townes Earle and Chris Trapper, among others. The band continues to frequent some of the best clubs in the Eastern, Southern and Midwestern areas of the United States, including Tin Angel (Philadelphia), Rock and Roll Hotel (Washington D.C.), Harpers Ferry (Boston), Headliners Music Hall (Louisville), Minglewood Hall (Memphis), The Valarium (Knoxville) and Bogart’s (Cincinnati). The Liars Club plans to tour the West Coast this fall.

Check him out for yourself at NYC’s The Living Room on April 15. Oh and we hear he’s working on a new album …

About: “ I wrote my first song when I was four years old, sitting on the floor of my father’s office, in a Manhattan law firm, where he was not happy. The song was called Beep-Beep-Bop-Bop-Bop-Beep – that was the hook anyway. Recording it on my dad’s Dictaphone, the message I was trying to get across was that brushing your teeth is fun, and important. Now my father is a psychologist and he is happy.

I wrote my second song 16 years later, not because I had a good idea but because I was sad and lonely. I don’t remember the lyrics or the melody, and I could not tell you the song title, but it might have been called Sad and Lonely. Boring, yes, and certainly a less important work than “Beep,” but nevertheless crucial to my development, because the second song led to a third, and the third to a fourth, and when I had a full set of original music I summoned the courage to play at the Sidewalk Anti-Hoot, where Kimya said, “Dude, I feel like I wrote that song” and Lach offered me the coveted Tuesday at 8 slot, and the rest is history…” (From Matt’s bio)

AOL Music Premiers Jen Hirsh’s “Myself in Two”

28 Feb

Check out AOL Music’s full cd listening party and premier of Jen Hirsh’s upcoming full length debut album Myself in Two (out TOMORROW!).

Myself in Two is a collection of ten songs that capture what soulful pop singer Jen Hirsh experienced over the past year: heartbreak, feelings of self doubt and, as Hirsh says, “living in LA with my heart in New York.”

The album was written by Adam Tressler and features an all-star cast including producer Max Coane (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin), Patrick Warren on keyboard and piano (Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow), and world-renowned mixing engineer Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney).

Evoking comparisons to the music of Sara Bareilles, John Mayer and Sufjan Stevens, SoCal native Jen Hirsh is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and has shared the stage with icons Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan, Steve Gadd, Abe Laboriel, and Michel Camilo.

PRE-RELEASE REVIEWS OF MYSELF IN TWO:
“Beyond being an extremely gifted vocalist and charismatic performer, the young indie pop songstress has loyal followings on both coasts of the USA, expertise in many genres, a wealth of life experience and the powerhouse talent to back it all up. I’m not the only person to notice that, either: she got very far in American Idol Season 9 and when she met John Mayer at an LA venue they both played in one night, he knew her name.” - Lip Magazine

“…Hirsh has teamed up with songwriter Adam Tressler to create an album that truly reflects who she is. Debut single ‘The Better Half’ is a folk-inspired, rolling pop lament – banjos and engagingly simplistic songwriting hinting at something quite interesting.” - The Girls Are Blog

- “‎["Myself in Two" is an] emotional roller-coaster ride that features some pretty amazing tracks in “You Know Me Too Well,” “Room So Big,” and “I Won’t Hold My Breath.” -IndieMediaMag

New Music Tuesday: Ben Franklin

22 Feb

Brooklyn based punk rock band Ben Franklin belts in your face lyrics that “Tell Us How [they] Really Feel” about politics and people. With vocals reminiscent of 80′s punk, their new EP Urgency is a must listen. The band will celebrate the release of Urgency on 7” vinyl at Cake Shop, on Friday Feb 25th 8pm, alongside buzz band The Gay Blades.

Ben Franklin's "Urgency"

About: Ben Franklin “is composed of old friends who are old hands at this sort of thing. Billy Gray and Adam Copeland (both of whom sing and play guitar) had a long past in The Meltdowns, and Adam currently helms a band named Black Water. Their bassist Eddie Garza hails from the LA punk band The OAOTs. Their drummer Sarah Tomek is a renowned and popular local session musician who at the time of writing is currently on a short tour in Europe.”
